What is the Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet consists of low carb, moderate protein, and a high-fat diet that is supposed to convert your metabolism from glucose as the main source of energy to relying on ketones instead.

This kind of diet puts the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis which is when the liver produces ketones as a main energy source for the body.

You may ask yourself why the ketogenic diet is a trend that many women and people in general are picking up on?

It is because it programs your body to function in a different way as our bodies is designed to burn fat instead of sugars.  With glucose as a main energy source, our bodies store fat and therefore we are running off of build up sugars in our system.

The problem is that there is a limit to how much glucose the body can store.  When that happens glucose is converted to more fat that is not used.

Ketosis

In lowering your intake of carbs and having a diet consisting of protein and fats, the body begins to alternate the energy source and your body enters a metabolic state known as ketosis.

Ketosis is a natural process and makes perfect sense when you think about the human body.  Some people have enough stored fats to survive 50 days naked and afraid(lol)…I like that show… but in all seriousness there is a reason why they say your body can go days without food and a few without water.  This is the process of ketosis as ketones occur from the breakdown of fat in the liver.

Insulin is produced to process the glucose in your bloodstream by moving it around your body.  If you are thinking why isn’t the body constantly breaking down fats in the liver, it is because when your body is producing insulin, the insulin prevents the fat cells from entering the bloodstream so they stay stored in the body.

When you lower your carb intake, glucose levels, along with blood sugar levels, drop which in turn lowers insulin levels.

This enables the fat cells to release the water they are storing (it’s why you first see a drop in water weight) and then the fat cells are able to enter the bloodstream and head to the liver.

This is the end goal of the ketogenic diet. You don’t enter ketosis by starving your body but instead you starve your body of carbohydrates.

When your body is producing optimal ketone levels you begin to notice many health, weight loss, physical and mental performance benefits.  The ketogenic diet is perfect for women that are looking to naturally lose weight.

    • I agree that exercising and not consuming to much junk food is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This diet can be temporary and is best for those that are looking to decrease body fat.
